Meet the Team

We pride ourselves on getting to know our customers, so we thought you might like to find out a bit more about us. Over the coming months we’ll take you ‘behind the scenes’ at Verus, helping you gain an insight into our team and their roles.

We’re kicking off with Andy, our longest serving engineer…

Andy – Helpdesk Manager

Background

My interest in computers started through playing computer games. I wanted to understand how the games worked, so I started learning how to code and got into programming. Since then I’ve always wanted to work with computers, and in August 2012 the opportunity came to join the team on a Level 2 apprenticeship through Craven College.

At first I was mainly answering the phones and providing 1st line support, helping customers with minor problems. As I got to know the job and dealt with the “low hanging fruit”, I quickly gained experience of commercial IT – servers, switches, firewalls etc. It was all very different to what I was familiar with on my home set-up.

7 years later…

I can’t believe I’ve worked here for almost 7 years – it doesn’t feel like that long.

It’s been a bit of a blur but looking back I realise that I’ve learnt a lot across a huge range of subjects, from network and server administration to database and application development.

I’ve also learnt different programming/scripting languages, including bash and PowerShell, as well as improving my PHP for web development. And I completed a Team Leader apprenticeship – a programme of work-based training focussing on inter-personal skills and communications, which I’m finding useful in my current role as Help Desk Manager.

Another of my tasks is to look after initial inductions for new starters at Verus, helping them become familiar with our systems and procedures. From then on, we have a policy of sharing knowledge wherever possible, so that everyone is continuously learning and developing their skills. It’s something that I really enjoy, and as every client is different, there’s always more to learn.

A typical day

For me, there is no such thing as a typical day at the office! Because of the work I do, every day is different, which I like because it keeps things interesting.

I’m one of a team of five engineers, providing IT support for more than 120 customers across Yorkshire, Lancashire, the rest of the UK and even internationally. Every day we’re overcoming challenges and finding solutions to problems for our clients, which is really satisfying.

Some jobs can be quite complicated, but actually these are the ones that I enjoy the most. I find it rewarding to sink my teeth into a complex project – something like a weird networking issue – and to troubleshoot and work out the best way to resolve it.

The future

With no two days the same, and new clients regularly coming on board, it’s hard to know what challenges tomorrow might bring.

Since I first joined Verus, the industry itself has changed a lot, especially in the last year due to GDPR which emphasised the Data Protection Act and made it stricter, for the better. There are also more threats online like viruses and ransomware, and the spammers are getting smarter, so we’re constantly having to update our own technology in an effort to stay ahead of the game and protect our customers.

So, there’s plenty to keep me busy, but if I do get some spare time in the future, I’d like to spend it building more bespoke internal systems – something which I really enjoy.
